A Guide to Georeferencing
While the outward aspect of MaPSTeDI is the final product of on-the-fly spatio-temporal map data and online mapping applications, the basis of the project is the process of georeferencing. Georeferencing provides the data that feeds the online mapping. Many institutions today are in the process of georeferencing their collections and many more are preparing to georeference their collections. One of MaPSTeDI's goals is to provide a framework whereby other institutions can learn how they can georeference their collections easily and affordably. This guide is designed to provide that framework.
This guide will reference every aspect of the georeferencing process from beginning to end. It does not attempt to address every possible method of georeferencing in full detail, although it will mention other possibilities as they arise. It will concentrate on manual georeferencing, which is the most affordable method for most institutions, with advice on how to automate parts of the process inexpensively and effectively.
