GeoMuse
GeoMuse is the Mountains and Plains Spatio-Temporal Database Informatics Initiative's GIS mapping application. Powered by open source software as well as ArcIMS software from ESRI, GeoMuse allows users to view collection data in a spatio-temporal format on accurate maps, providing quick and easy access to species distribution and biodiversity data. Complete with a full set of traditional GIS tools and a continually expanding set of biodiversity functions, GeoMuse provides the tools necessary to analyze collections data.
Features of GeoMuse
- powerful searching of 16 databases from 3 institutions
- dynamic maps showing thousands of specimens
- traditional suite of GIS tools to easily navigate and interact with maps
- large set of reference layers to help data analysis
- descriptive base layers, including USGS topographic maps (DRG) and digital orthophoto imagery (DOQ)
- data export to text database, Excel spreadsheet, shapefile, and image
- protection of sensitive data

Please note:
- The map interface of GeoMuse requires Microsoft Explorer 5+ or Netscape 6+. We cannot guarantee proper functionality to users who do not access the Internet through one of these browsers. However, these users may access the collections through the Text Interface which provides some basic mapping functions.
- Pop-up blockers must be disabled. GeoMuse uses pop-up windows to provide flexibility and advanced tools. While pop-up blockers will allow access to the main searching and mapping options, they will prevent use of many tools.
- Broadband access is highly recommended. Because of the large size of map graphics, it is recommended that users access GeoMuse with a broadband connection. Modem access will still function but will be considerably slower. The Text Interface provides much faster access to modem users.
- A screen resolution of 1024x768 or higher is recommmended. The minimum resolution necessary is 800x600 for the map interface version of GeoMuse. The text interface allows access at all resolutions.
- Maps take time to download. Even with a broadband connection, maps and text results are time-consuming to produce and may take 10-15 seconds or more to process, especially during high-usage periods.
- GeoMuse is currently in beta version. Bugs and inconsistencies may exist although every attempt has been made to eliminate them. Please report bugs on MaPSTeDI's SourceForge page. Reporting bugs allows us to create a more robust and more usable interface.
